Vehicle Safety: “Tell Me” Questions

During your car driving test, you’ll be asked one “tell me” question before you start driving. These cover safety checks and vehicle operation:

  • Check that brakes are working before a journey.
  • Locate the tyre pressure guide & check pressures (including spare).
  • Adjust head restraint for correct protection.
  • Check tyre tread depth (min. 1.6 mm across central ¾ of tyre) & general condition.
  • Test headlights & tail lights (operate switch, then walk around).
  • Identify ABS warning light if there’s a fault.
  • Test indicators (operate switch, then walk around).
  • Test brake lights (use reflections or assistance).
  • Check power-assisted steering by steering feel test before & after engine start.
  • Operate rear fog lights & explain when to use.
  • Switch main beam on & off; identify dashboard indicator.
  • Open bonnet: check engine oil level using dipstick.
  • Open bonnet: check engine coolant level on header tank or radiator.
  • Open bonnet: check hydraulic brake fluid reservoir level.

Vehicle Safety: “Show Me” Questions

During your driving, you’ll be asked one “show me” task when it’s safe to do so:

  • Wash and clean the rear windscreen.
  • Wash and clean the front windscreen.
  • Switch on dipped headlights.
  • Set the rear demister.
  • Operate the horn.
  • Demist the front windscreen.
  • Open and close a side window.
